The 10 Ways You Should Never Describe Yourself

When other people use these words to describe your talents, it's OK. When you do it, you just sound like a pompous jerk.

Picture this: You meet someone new. "What do you do?" he asks.

"I'm an architect," you say.

"Oh, really?" he answers. "Have you designed any buildings I've seen?"

"Maybe," you reply. "We did the new library at the university..."

"Oh wow," he says. "I've seen it. That's a beautiful building..."

And you're off. Maybe he's a potential client, maybe not... but either way you've made a great impression.
You sound awesome.

Now picture this: You meet someone new. "What do you do?" he asks.

"I'm a passionate, innovative, dynamic provider of architectural services who uses a collaborative approach to create and deliver outstanding customer experiences."

And he's off, never to be seen again... because you sound like a pompous ass.
Do you--whether on your website, or more likely on social media accounts--describe yourself differently than you do in person?

Do you use hacky clichés and overblown superlatives and breathless adjectives?

Do you write things about yourself you would never have the nerve to actually say?

If so, it's time for a change.

Here are some words that are great when used by other people to describe you, but you should never use to describe yourself:

"Motivated."
Check out Chris Rock's response (not safe for work or the politically correct) to people who say they take care of their kids. Then substitute the word "motivated." Never take credit for things you are supposed to do--or be.

"Authority."
If you have to say you're an authority, you aren't. Show your expertise instead. "Presenter at SXSW" or "Delivered TED Talk at Long Beach 2010" indicates a level of authority. Unless you can prove it, "social media marketing authority" just means you spend a ton of time on Twitter.

"Global provider."
The vast majority of businesses can sell goods or services worldwide; the ones that can't--like restaurants--are obvious. (See?) Only use "global provider" if that capability is not assumed or obvious; otherwise you just sound like a really small company trying to appear really big.

"Innovative."
Most companies claim to be innovative. Most people claim to be innovative. Most are not. (I'm not.) That's okay, because innovation isn't a requirement for success.
If you are innovative, don't say it. Prove it. Describe the products you've developed. Describe the processes you've modified. Give us something real so your innovation is unspoken but evident... which is always the best kind of evident to be.

"Creative."
See particular words often enough and they no longer make an impact. "Creative" is one of them. (Go to LinkedIn and check out some profiles; "creative" will appear in the majority.)
"Creative" is just one example. Others include extensive, effective, proven, dynamic, influential, team player, collaborative... some of those terms truly may describe you, but since they're also being used to describe everyone else they've lost their impact.

 "Curator."
Museums have curators. Libraries have curators. Tweeting links to stuff you find interesting doesn't make you a curator... or an authority or a guru.

"Passionate."
Say you're incredibly passionate about incorporating an elegant design aesthetic in everyday objects and--to me at least--you sound a little scary. Same if you're passionate about developing long-term customer solutions. Try focus, concentration, or specialization instead. Save the passion for your loved one.

"Unique."
Fingerprints are unique. Snowflakes are unique. You are unique--but your business probably isn't. Don't pretend to be, because customers don't care about unique; they care about "better." Show how you're better than the competition and in the minds of customers you will be unique.

 "Guru."
People who try to be clever for the sake of being clever are anything but. Don't be a self-proclaimed ninja, sage, connoisseur, guerilla, wonk, egghead... it's awesome when your customers affectionately describe you in that way, but when you do it it's apparent you're trying way too hard.

"Incredibly..."
Check out some random bios and you'll find plenty of further-modified descriptors: "Incredibly passionate," "profoundly insightful," "extremely captivating..." isn't it enough to be insightful or captivating? Do you have to be incredibly passionate?

North India blackout: 7 states suffer

Power supply in seven states across north India was hit early on Monday following a breakdown in the Northern Grid, an official said. Apart from Delhi, supply in Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Jammu and Kashmir were disrupted.

Millions of people have been affected due to the power failure. Speaking to the media, Power minister Sushil Kumar Shinde said just now that 60% of supply has been restored in the northern region.

He also said that essential services have been restored and the remaining will be restored in around 2 hours. The minister also said a probe has been ordered into the failure of power in the northern region.
Earlier today, power supply was disrupted in seven states from 2.32 a.m. It is now partially affected in Delhi and Rajasthan. We are in the process of restoring the supply," VV Sharma, general manager of Power System Operation Corporation Limited, said.

According to the Power System Operation Corp Ltd, the exact reasons for the grid failure are being ascertained.

"The trouble resulted in power outage in the entire northern region, but for parts of Badarpur in south Delhi, Narora and Simbhauli in Uttar Pradesh and Bhinma in Rajasthan," a statement said.

The company, a subsidiary of the state-run Power Grid Corporation of India, which manages the grid, said effort was underway to seek supplies from the eastern and the western regions, even as power to the railway system had been partially restored.

"The restoration of the grid may take a few more hours. The engineers have been trying to restore it since early morning. We are giving first priority to public services like hospitals and transport," Sharma added.
According to reports, this is the worst northern grid failure since 2001.

Metro services in Delhi has been hit due to power failure. Water and electricity supply across seven states in north India were also hit. The power supply is slowly being restored now.

The power supply was hit in seven states since the northern grid collapsed. Power was restored in some parts of these states by around 9 am.

According to power ministry officials the situation will return to normal by noon in Delhi.

Thousands of rush-hour passengers faced lot of problem as metro services were hit and there was major traffic jam in many parts of Delhi.

By 9:30 am, the situation was much better on all six lines on the Delhi Metro.

Power failure also hit Delhi's six water treatment plants. According to media reports, five of water treatment plants are now operational. Delhi's Jal Board water pumping stations have also been hit.  The Jal Board's are being given priority by the power companies.

Huge traffic jams and chaos could be seen on the Delhi road's as traffic signals were down due to power failure. The Traffic Police are trying to physically man the traffic at some places.

The train services were disrupted in Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh due to collapse of the northern grid this morning, leaving a large number of passengers stranded.

A number of passenger trains bound for Delhi and beyond, Chandigarh, Amritsar, Jammu, Ferozepur and Kalka were stranded at way side stations due to failure of electricity, a senior railway official said.

He said efforts were on to move the passenger trains with diesel engines after detaching them from running goods trains which would remain halted at way side railway stations.

The stations where passenger trains were stranded include Ambala, Kurukshetra, Phillaur, Sirhind, Ludhiana, Phagwara and Karnal.

Some trains were stranded mid way as the electric engines hauling them came to a halt due to failure of power. Kalka Chandigarh Delhi Shatabdi Express left the local station 90 minutes behind scheduled departure of 6.53 am after a diesel engine was attached to it.

The trains affected include Amritsar Delhi Shatabdi Express, Allahabad Chandigarh Unchahaar, Lucknow Chandigarh Sadbhavna, Howraha Kalka Mail, Delhi Jammu Mail and a number of other super fast, express, passenger and local trains.

The official said that the signal system had also blanked at a number of places due to the power failure.
The hospital services were also affected in many places. However, operations at the Delhi airport largely remained unaffected due to the failure of Northern Grid. "As soon as there was a disruption in power supply, all our essential services like flight arrival and departure, check-in, baggage handling, aerobridge services were shifted to our back-up system.

So all these operations remained normal", an airport spokesperson said. "We have one of the best DG (Diesel Generating) back-up system of the world.

However, there might be some disruption in our non-essential services", he added. There were reports of air conditioning not functioning in Terminal 1D and some portions of Terminal 3. Also, there was no power in some retail outlets at the airport.

"Overall ninety-five percent of our services remained unaffected", a spokesperson said.

According to reports, preliminary enquiry shows the collapse happened due to a fault near Agra.

H-1B, H-1B1 visas

H-1B, H-1B1 visas Filing application may get tougher

The process of filing H-1B visas may get tougher. The USA government has proposed some changes in the Form ETA-9035 Labor Condition Application (LCA) form, which is used by companies that want to place non-immigrant employees in the country for work. The Department of Labor (DOL) put up a notice in this regard on its website on July 09, 2012.

The changes proposed by the companies may be quite relevant to the companies that have put forward the application. At present, employers can use the same LCA form for hundreds of candidates. However, the proposed changes include limiting the number to just 10 candidates, which will affect just 2.6% of the employers who apply, according to DOL. It has also said that it faces challenges when putting the LCA obligations into effect when it comes to hundreds of candidates; on the other hand, assessing 10 applications would prove to be easier.

Moreover, employers may now have to give more information about the existing wages, with additional information describing how it was determined whether the employee requires H-1B visa. According to the proposed changes, they will also have to tell whether the non-immigrant employees are exempt, and if they not, then the companies have to describe their efforts to hire staff from the US. Companies would also have to provide the address where they keep the employee's public access file.

Rather than a host of details about the non-immigrant employees, the LCA form presently asks only for their post and the employer. But the proposed changes demand the name, country of citizenship, date of birth, and immigration status of the candidates. Companies would also have to tell if the candidate has sent the PERM Application for Permanent Employment Certification. This way, the authorities would be able to compare the data provided by employers for H-1B and E-3 visa and PERM certification.
The candidates' location privacy will go for a toss if the proposed changes come into effect. The proposed changes ask for details of the type of location, namely business premises, a private household or the employees' residences. They will also have to specify the details of the end-client location. If yes, then the candidate would have to furnish the name of the end-client as well. This will also affect employers' flexibility as they may end up filling up a new LCA form if the employer is moved from one end-client to another, even if the move is within the same geographical region.

In case the candidates are out of USA and require H-1B visas to come to the country and the employers are filing the LCA on their behalf, the companies would not be able to take them as employees until they lawfully arrive with valid H-1B visas. This means that companies would not be able to close the end-client deal before they file the LCA.

For wages, if the employers use a wage survey other than the prevailing wage of the concerned geographic area, then the details of the wage survey, including survey source, survey publisher and the date of publication, would have to be provided.

The notice says that the Employment and Training Administration (ETA), Labor, is asking for comments on "the collection of data of the approved information collection." The last date for submitting the comments is September 07, 2012, as per the notice. The changes proposed by the department need to be approved by the Office of Management and Budget before they come into effect.

HIDDEN DANGERS OF FACEBOOK

When Mahesh received a phone call from a friend asking him if he was in trouble, he was mildly surprised. The surprise turned to alarm as he learnt that his friend had received a message on Facebook, saying that he had been robbed of his mobile and money while holidaying in Paris and updating Facebook courtesy of a stranger, and asking for money to be sent to a strange account.

Mahesh was lucky. He was able to log on to Facebook, change his password and update his status, asking his friends to ignore any requests for money. Mahesh had become, for a brief period of time, a victim of the 419 scam - updated for the Facebook age.

Read: 9 random things people do on Facebook

In 1995, there were 16 million users of the internet. It took another 10 years for the number of users to hit 900 million. Facebook had a million users, in 2004, its year of incorporation. In 2006, it had 16 million users. As of April this year, the social networking site had hit 901 million users around the world, doing in six years what had taken the entire Internet a decade.

Where there are crowds, there are criminals. And it's not surprising that Facebook attracts a whole new breed of scamsters. Their objectives remain the same -- it's either money, personal information or redirection to shady schemes or page hits.

In 2009, a woman named Leanne Saylor took a Facebook quiz. You know the type "Which Star Wars character are you most like?" or "Which celebrity are you?" There are thousands of these on Facebook. Saylor took an online IQ test. On completion, she was asked to enter her mobile phone number to receive the results on her phone. She got the results - and she also got subscribed to three mobile text messaging services that ended up with an additional $44 (Rs. 2,500) on her mobile bill.

Anyone active on Facebook is bound to have seen posts like this "COOL!! i cant believe its real and official we can now see who's viewing our profile, Check Who's Viewing Your Profile here" or an image list of a user's friends with the caption "Your profile visitors in the last 12 hours". The links that accompany these posts invariably lead to one scam or the other.

The problem lies with the nature of Facebook applications. When you launch a Facebook application, you first get past a permissions page. For example, the popular "My Calendar" app requires information to "Your basic info", which includes your name, your profile picture, your gender, your networks, your user id, your friend list and any other information you made public.

Angry Birds Friends, one of the most popular Facebook games, requires all the above information and your email id. It will also make posts on your behalf on your timeline. When a user signs up for an app, all this valuable information is made available to the app developer - and the use of this information is entirely dependent on the app developer's benevolence.

David Hall, regional consumer product marketing manager for Symantec Asia Pacific says that the most common ways scamsters benefit from Facebook attacks are through redirection to scammy product pages, premium subscription services and more dangerously, the so-called "Drive By Downloads".
Drive By Download happens when a user either download a piece of software - a browser plug-in, an ActiveX control or any other piece of executable software without fully understanding what it does - or a piece of software downloads itself on to the user's computer without the user's knowledge or consent.
Ultimately, not being taken in depends on being careful. If one of your friends has uncharacteristically watched a video titled "OMG, Look at what this girl wore to the beach", ignore it. If you see a post about a tool that allows you to remove the Facebook timeline, ignore it. Facebook also doesn't allow anyone to track who's seen your profile . And use Facebook's security options.

Facebook's security page allows you to enforce secure browsing. You can also choose to be notified by email or text when someone accesses your account from a strange device or machine.

You can also use the security page to set up app passwords, meaning you have different passwords for apps and your Facebook account. Finally, you can review the active Sessions settings to see the locations and operating systems from which your account has been accessed.

Infosys May Skip Campus Hiring

Brokerage firm Morgan Stanley has released a report stating that IT major Infosys will not hire new recruits from college campuses in the remaining half of 2012. The company has also not released its campus hiring plans for the second half of the year.

Such a step clearly indicates the slump that the country's second largest software services company is going through.

While announcing first quarter results recently, Infosys cut its hiring forecast for the fiscal year 2012-13 by 22% as compared to the year-ago period. As compared to 45,000 hirings in 2011-12, the company planned to recruit 35,000 new employees this year.

In the April-June 2012 quarter, Infosys got fewer employees on board due to losses and diminished revenue forecast. It got 9,236 personnel on board in the period compared with 10,676 in the preceding quarter.

The Indian IT industry is going through a tough phase and many new projects have been delayed, according to Morgan Stanley. This has resulted in a decrease in employee utilisation rate and rise in bench strength across several IT companies.

Last month, Infosys changed plans of getting new recruits on board and pushed the joining date for 28,000 employees to mid-2013.

Commenting on the Morgan Stanley report, an Infosys' spokesperson said that the company has not decided about its campus hiring for the next season. "As per Nasscom's directive, IT companies can start campus hiring only in September. Our hiring will depend on business needs and we will have better visibility into it in August," she said.

Adidas in £2.25m deal to run Metro cover wraps ??

Free sheet ad campaign featuring Team GB athletes is sportswear company's biggest ever print drive

Adidas has struck a £2.25m deal to run cover wraps around freesheet Metro every day of London Olympics, making it the largest newspaper advertising deal of the 2012 Games.

Adidas, an official sponsor of the London 2012 Olympics, said that deal marks its biggest ever print ad campaign.

The deal, which is understood to be worth about £2.25m, will see collectable cover wraps of Team GB athletes run on the 17 days of the main Olympic Games, beginning on Friday.

Adidas has used an artist or illustrator to create images of stars including Jessica Ennis, Sir Chris Hoy, Bradley Wiggins and Tom Daley, each of which has been timed to appear on a day when the athlete is competing.

The first day of the campaign, which will be for the opening ceremony on Friday, will feature an image of several Team GB competitors.

"A consecutive cover wrap of this scale has never been done before, and demonstrates our commitment to driving stand-out as a partner of London 2012," said Nick Craggs, UK marketing director at Adidas.
"For the Olympics, Metro will be publishing seven days a week, so we wanted stand-out," said Kenny Campbell, editor of the Associated Newspapers freesheet.

The launch of the campaign ups the ante in the battle between Adidas, which has paid tens of millions of pounds to be officially associated with the Olympics, and Nike, which has launched an ambush marketing campaign to try and capitalise on global interest in the event.

"This deal shows why you become an Olympic sponsor, there is no way you could do a deal like this if you were just trying to piggyback on the London games," said a source. "The newspaper market has not done fantastically out of Olympic advertising but the scale of this proves that there are some big deals out there."
Stephen Daintith, finance director at Associated parent company Daily Mail & General Trust, said that he expects to make close to £10m in revenue from Olympic-related advertising across Metro, Daily Mail, Mail on Sunday and its portfolio of regional newspaper titles.

On Wednesday Nike launched a global TV ad campaign, supported by press and poster ads in the UK, which features everyday athletes competing in places named London around the world.
Earlier this month, BSkyB is thought to have paid about £600,000 for the privilege of being the first advertiser in the 42-year history of the Sun to have a cover wrap on the newspaper, promoting its summer of 3D sports coverage.
Adidas's ad campaign has been created by ad agency Sid Lee. The deal with Metro was struck by media planning and buying agency Carat UK.

A Look at the Six Most Asked Questions on UID

For more than 4 years, the 12-digit number called Aadhaarhas generated more debate than action.
But now that 18 crore Indians do have this number and 42 crore more should have it by April 2013, it's time to focus more on what the number will—and can—really do.
For, it is the utility of the card that will make all the struggle in its implementation worthwhile—or worthless
Here's a look at the six most asked questions on UID
1) What is Aadhaar authentication ? Is an individual's right of privacy ensured?
Aadhaar authentication is a process through which the number, along with other attributes (demographics ,biometrics or One-Time Pin), is submitted to UIDAI's Central Identities Data Repository (CIDR) for verification ; the CIDR verifies whether the data submitted matches the data available in CIDR and responds with a "yes/no" . No personal identity information is returned as part of the response.
2) When do I need to authenticate?
Service providers, such as the government for PDS and NREGA or banks, are expected to link Aadhaar authentication to their services. Residents would need to authenticate either at the time of subscribing to the service or at the time of availing service delivery . Then no one else can avail the benefits meant for a particular resident.

3) How will children be captured in the database?
No biometrics for children below 5 years; their UID will be processed on the basis of demographic information and photograph linked with their parents' UID. Once they are five years old, they need to be re-enrolled with biometrics of 10 fingers, iris and pho tograph. Biometrics will be updated once they turn 15.
4) What about biometrics of the differently-abled and people with no finger prints or those without fingers?
Biometric standards prescribed will ensure that these groups are not excluded. In the case of people without hands/ fingers only photo will be used for identity determination and there will be markers to determine uniqueness.
5) How will an Aadhaar-enabled bank account help a resident who already has a bank account?
The resident can link existing bank account to Adhaar as disbursement of social security benefits like pensions, scholarships or MGNREGS wages would only be through Aadhaar-enabled accounts .
UIDAI is working with states and central ministries to designate Aadhaar-enabled accounts for disbursal of all social security benefits. The individual would be able to access Aadhaar enabled bank account through a low-cost micro-ATM network which will have large geographical reach. Instant payments through biometric authentication and mobile payments will also be enabled in the future for such accounts.
6) What are micro-ATMs ? How will they work in the Aadhaar system?
Micro-ATMs are biometric authentication enabled hand-held device (also known as a Point of Transaction terminal). They will primarily allow the following functions: cash withdrawal, cash deposit, balance enquiry and remittances . These devices will be operated by business correspondents (BCs) appointed by banks.
The physical currency would be handled by this BC and not a machine like a regular ATM. All transactions will require online biometric authentication with the UIDAI authentication server in order to be processed..

How to keep yourself safe on the Internet

Now a days when you had to stand in long queues to pay your Electricity bills, Phone bills, Income Tax returns and almost everything. But easy access to the internet and availability of these services online not just provide relief but of course helps in saving time. At the same time users are also exposed to the threats of identity theft, loss of personal information and spams.

If we follow a few golden rules we can easily protect our personal information and greatly reduce the possibility of fraud. Here are some of them:

Security suites
Outpost Security Suite: This is the only free security suite that offers antivirus, firewall and anti malware in a single package. It even offers email and web surfing security for online protection and monitors application behavior to keep a check on malicious infections. Being free, it does have some limitations — only one auto update is allowed in a day. Others need to be manually done. Also, it does not include identity theft protection or technical support.

Norton 360 (v 6.0): As an all-in-one suite, Norton 360 is pretty complete. Apart from protecting against local threats, it has a set of tools for online identity theft protection, to tune up your PC, Email and instant message monitoring as well as browser plugins to warn you of harmful websites & downloads. It even has parental controls to track Internet usage and keep kids safe from online threats. Finally, the price includes 2GB cloud storage. Norton 360 can automatically take a regular backup of important files to the cloud.

Firewalls: Comodo: The free Comodo firewall uses cloud-based data to to protect your computer against online threats and programs. It is capable of detecting most trojans, worms, hacker attacks and even has a sandbox mode where new programs can be run in a protected, virtual environment to make sure that they are not harmful. In 'game mode', Comodo works silently in the background — useful if you don't want to be disturbed while playing a game or watching a movie. Finally, a built in 'TrustConnect' Wi-Fi feature encrypts and safeguards data transfers when connected to a public network.

ZoneAlarm Pro: The Pro version of Zone Alarm's Firewall protects your computer against hackers and makes it invisible online by hiding your information. It has a built-in anti-phishing tool that stops fake/infected websites from opening on your system and it even authenticates websites to show you which ones are secure and which are not. If an active download is infected, the firewall automatically suspends the download for protection. It even gives you 2GB online storage where the program uploads and backs up important data that can be restored if required.

Mobile:
Avast for Android: Avast's free app provides real time antivirus protection and even offers a firewall that can stop any app from accessing the Internet. It even offers SMS/call filtering, an app task manager and can show access rights of each app installed to detect any data stealing. The app has a strong set of anti-theft features that include lost notification on the phone, SIM lock, SIM change notifications, remote restart, remote wipe as well as the option to remotely locate your phone using GPS. The only thing that this free app skips out on is any sort of data backup service.

VirusBarrier for iOS: This $2.99 app can do on-demand scans of content downloaded on to your iOS device. The program scans for malware, adware and hacker tools on the iOS device which might get transferred and then infect the computer (Windows/MAC/Unix) when the device is connected to it. It can scan through zip files, email attachments, files stored online inDropbox or on FTP severs and can also scan websites for phishing links or other online threats.

Stay safe while downloading: Using Torrents is not illegal - sharing of copyrighted information is. Having said that, if you are a torrent user and are fed up of internet service providers clamping down on torrent speeds or are wary about your privacy being compromised (because of over-zealous media industry watchdogs), you should consider services like www.peerblock.com and www.btguard. com.

BTGuard's paid service completely hides your computer's IP address and provides a secure, encrypted route for your torrent data. PeerBlock is open source and works in conjunction with www.iblocklist.com. It essentially blocks your computer's communication with advertising orspyware oriented servers, computers monitoring torrents or computers which have been 'hacked' ( botnets).

Safeguard your property: Normally, there's not a very good chance that a stolen/lost laptop will be returned to you. Unless you install Prey first, that is. Head to www.preyproject.com to create and account and get started - it is free and available for Windows, Mac & Linux/Ubuntu. Prey installs in stealth mode - you won't find it anywhere on your computer - not in the hard drive and there's no mention of it in the start menu. Instead, you control it using an online control panel which you log into from any web browser on any machine.

Prey sits idle unless it receives a signal from you that the laptop has been stolen. Then onwards, as soon as the machine is connected to a network, it's exact location is relayed back you to. You can also choose to take a screenshot of what the thief is doing, use the webcam to take a photo, hide your passwords and data or do a complete data wipe. The point is, you stay in control and because you can continuously track the computer, chances of recovery are good. Prey is also available for smartphones running Android and iOS (download them from the respective app stores).

GlassFish Operations: Log Notifications

Most of the prominent requirements for application servers derive from the operations space. Taking this into account the next Java EE platform specification will focus entirely on platform as a service (PaaS) and cloud operations. Looking at what we have today still leaves a couple of questions unanswered. The one I get asked quite a lot is: "How do you configure GlassFish to receive notifications/alerts/messages on important log entries?". Seems to be a good topic to blog about.

Application Logging vs. System Logging vs. MonitoringYou basically have three options here. Either you choose to integrate some notification magic into your application logging or you go with the system logging or you go with the more classy monitoring approach. However the differences should be clear. By default GlassFish does not provide any third-party logging integration. Whatever logging way you go from a framework perspective you will end up logging application specific events. If you are looking for some kind of application server specific notifications you have to take the system logging or the monitoring road.

System LoggingThe easiest configuration I have ever done. GlassFish supports Unix Syslog. By checking the "Write to system log" box in the "Logger Settings" at your desired configuration you enable this feature. In fact this works like a charm but has a couple of drawbacks. Syslog is a protocol that allows a machine to send event notification messages across IP networks to event message collectors - also known as Syslog Servers or Syslog Daemons. It's a connection-less UDP based IP protocol. Some kind of broadcast. If you want to react upon ERRORS or other severity messages you have to use the facilities which come with your syslog server/daemon. This might be a more high sophisticated appliance (STRM, Log Manager) or a piece of software. Most notably the syslog format isn't encrypted in any way so you have to be careful about configuring this. Syslog-ng isn't supported as of latest 3.1.2. And some more hints if you are interested in how this is done. Have a look at com.sun.enterprise.server.logging.Syslog and SyslogHandler. You see that you can only send messages to localhost. No chance to configure that. You have to use syslog forwarding if you want that stuff to end up on another machine. Running on Windows requires to install one of the many open or closed software products. I testedhttp://www.thestarsoftware.com/syslogdaemonlite.html">Star SysLog Daemon Lite and was quite happy with the results.
One last note: If you are stumbling over older Google search results refering to something called "GlassFish Performance Advisor" .. that actually no longer exists. Hasn't been ported to 3.x branch.

Application LoggingIn fact, GlassFish doesn't provide a special logging framework integration unlike WebLogic server does. So going this way you will lose the core GlassFish system logs and you can only focus on application specific logging. And that is where the integration actually happens. On an application level. Almost any recent frameworks (Log4J, LogBack) have a couple of providers for you to use out of the box. In terms of notifications email is still the simplest way to go. For that you have to look for the right appender (SMTP). Both LogBack (SMTPAppender) and Log4j (SMTPAppender) offer something here. Configuration is straight forward and only requires you to input some stuff about your SMTP infrastructure. Don't forget to set the right level of logging here. You are definitely not willing to have all DEBUG level messages send to your inbox.
Still thinking about the syslog thing? Both Log4j and LogBack can produce syslog messages with their SyslogAppenders (log4j, logback). But all the above mentioned drawbacks also apply here. On top of that you will not be able to receive the GlassFish core log messsages with your syslog server. There might be very rare and special situations where this would be of any help.

MonitoringOne last thing to mention is the monitoring approach. A couple of monitoring suites can actually read your logfiles (keyword: logfile adapters) and you can configure your logging solution to react to certain pattern. While I don't consider that elegant it might be a stable solution to work with and I have seen this a lot in the wild. Another approach could be to use JMX or even the GlassFish admin REST interface to find out about the relevant metrics. But both don't provide access to the logging subsystem.
